Mark Yu is senior vice president and senior financial officer of Swiss Re Financial Services Corporation. In that role, he is responsible for implementing and coordinating capital management controls and initiatives with specific reference to Life & Health carriers globally as well as for the Asset Management entities based in the US.
Mr. Yu has served in the actuarial field for more than 9 years. He has worked in several areas, including annuity product development/management, reinsurance valuation/financial reporting, and group life pricing and marketing. He has worked for such companies as Lincoln Re, Lincoln National Life and Guarantee Life Insurance Company. On the job, Mr. Yu recounts his most exciting moments are when he is "working on large and complex opportunities and developing solutions needed to close the deals."
Mr. Yu earned his master’s degree in actuarial science from University of Iowa in 1999. While attending University of Iowa, his favorite class was Life Contingencies, which was taught by Dr. Elias Shiu. "At the beginning of every semester, Dr. Shiu would warn us how challenging the class would be and reward us $20 to drop it if we were not ready for the challenge." Prior to University of Iowa, Mr. Yu earned his bachelor's degree in computer science from Tsing-Hua University in Taiwan.
Mr. Yu is an active member of the Society of Actuaries (SOA) and American Academy of Actuaries (AAA). Mr. Yu currently serves as vice-chair of the SOA’s Actuary of the Future Section. Previously, he was serving as continuing education director on the SOA’s Younger Actuarial Network and on the SOA’s Advance Finance/Enterprise Risk Management Examination Committee. He has authored and been published on enterprise risk management in the SOA’s Enterprise Risk Management Specialty Guide.
Additionally, Mr. Yu has served as a moderator/speaker at the SOA’s Life and Annual meetings and has spoken to actuarial science major students at University of Iowa, Drake University, University of Connecticut, Baruch College, New York University and Columbia University.
In his spare time, Mr. Yu holds a 2nd degree black belt in Aikido. He also enjoys swimming, fishing, skiing, poker and ping-pong.
